Apple reportedly has a new policy for its iPhone app store in which any application with “overtly sexual content” will be removed from the App Store, according to an e-mail obtained by TechCrunch. But just like countless previous times, this latest tweak to Apple’s app rejection policy will have app developers scratching their heads trying to figure out what’s going on.

Wobbly Policy

One app that has been removed from iTunes, called Wobble iBoobs, lets you take a selected image of a bikini model, add “wobble zones” to the photo, and then make those parts of the image move when you shake your iPhone. This app’s function was apparently a little too hot for Apple, so the app’s developer, Jon Atherton, received a removal notice from Apple, according to TechCrunch.

Referring to the Wobble iBoobs application, Apple reportedly wrote, ” We have recently received numerous complaints from our customers about this type of content and have changed our guidelines appropriately. We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application.”

Other sexual apps that have disappeared from the App Store include SlideHer: Tera Patrick and Dirty Fingers: Screen Wash; it’s not clear whether those apps were removed voluntarily or also received takedown notices. Read the rest of this entry »

Apple Bans Sex Related iPhone Apps

In a pair of reports yesterday, Reuters noted that rumors of Apple dumping Google in favor of Microsoft’s Bing for the iPhone’s search functionality have hung in the air at this week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. According to the first report, Google vice president Vic Gundotra called the Apple-Google relationship “stable” and noted that Google has “no reason to believe that’s going to change”.

“Apple is a very close and valuable partner and we’re very excited about the relationship we have with them today. We have no reason to believe that’s going to change,” Vic Gundotra, who leads Google’s mobile engineering, told journalists on Monday.

“We don’t want to comment on those rumours,” he said when pressed on the issue of the iPhone at a roundtable at industry trade fair Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. “We think that relationship is stable.”

A second report from Reuters described Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s reaction upon being asked about the prospects of a deal to bring Bing to the iPhone.

When asked about the reports, Ballmer said “I wouldn’t comment either way,” but smiled, and repeated the phrase when the reporter remarked that Ballmer looked happy.

Apple’s deal with Google to provide default search for the iPhone has been pegged at a value of over $100 million per year for Apple as it participates in revenue sharing with Google through the platform.

Square UP was showing their new credit card processing solution for the iPhone. They are planning on offering a no-hassle way for individuals to start accepting credit card payments. Simply buy their $1 app from the App Store, sign up for service, and they will send you a small hardware dongle that will swipe credit cards (shown right). No individual merchant account is required as Square UP handles all the processing and payments and takes a 2.9% cut of all sales.

The Square service is currently in beta testing and should arrive later this year. I wonder if they’re doing external beta testing, as this is a really great idea as I’m all for a cash free way of life!

Opera Software today announced that it will preview an iPhone version of its Opera Mini mobile browser at next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

“This is a unique opportunity to introduce the fast, feature-rich Opera Mini experience for the iPhone, and to showcase our latest beta releases of Opera Mobile and Opera Mini on other platforms and devices. Opera’s mission is to bring the Web to the world, and by making Opera Mini available on yet another platform, we are one step closer.”

According to Reuters, Opera Mini for the iPhone has not been submitted to Apple for review, and it remains unclear whether Apple would consider approving a direct competitor to the iPhone’s included mobile version of Safari. Read the rest of this entry »

U.S. filmmaker Dan Woolley was shooting a video about poverty in Haiti when the earthquake struck. He could have died, but he ultimately survived with the help of an iPhone first-aid app that taught him to treat his wounds.

After being crushed by a pile of rubble, Woolley used his digital SLR to illuminate his surroundings and snap photos of the wreckage in search of a safe place to dwell. He took refuge in an elevator shaft, where he followed instructions from an iPhone first-aid app to fashion a bandage and tourniquet for his leg and to stop the bleeding from his head wound, according to an MSNBC story.

The app even warned Woolley not to fall asleep if he felt he was going into shock, so he set his cellphone’s alarm clock to go off every 20 minutes. Sixty-five hours later, a French rescue team saved him.

“I just saw the walls rippling and just explosive sounds all around me,” said Woolley, recounting the earthquake to MSNBC. “It all happened incredibly fast. David yelled out, ‘It’s an earthquake,’ and we both lunged and everything turned dark.”

Woolley’s incident highlights a large social implication of the iPhone and other similar smartphones. A constant internet connection, coupled with a device supporting a wealth of apps, can potentially transform a person into an all-knowing, always-on being. In Woolley’s case, an iPhone app turned him into an amateur medic to help him survive natural disaster.

Say what you will about the iPhone. This story is incredible.

Update: As Wired reader “bbqbologna” noted in the comments below, the app used in question was Pocket First Aid and CPR. A user review by “Webguydan” reads, “Consulted this app, while trapped under Hotel Montana in Haiti earthquake, to treat excessive bleeding and shock. Helped me stay alive till I was rescued 64 hours later.”

While Apple (NSDQ:AAPL)’s iPad tablet has been hailed as a “game-changer,” security experts contend that the device is ripe for the same jailbreaking exploits carried out on the iPhone and other mobile devices.

Apple made a splash last week with the launch of iPad, a device that falls somewhere between a notebook and smartphone, containing a flat-panel touch screen, wireless connectivity and a virtual keyboard while providing the user with the ability to watch movies, read books electronically, listen to music and access about 150,000 smart phone applications.

Security researchers put the Apple iPad on par with other industry-changing devices, such as the iPod and the iPhone. Meanwhile, Cupertino issued an update to iPhone and iPod Touch Tuesday, patching CoreAudio, ImageIO and WebKit vulnerabilities that could enable remote hackers to execute malicious code that would allow them to take control of a user’s device. However, Kevin Finisterre, head of penetration testing for NetraGard, said that those same vulnerabilities could ostensibly extend to the iPad, once it officially is put on the market.

“I think that realistically, it’s going to be the same song and dance we saw with the iPod and iPhone. You’re going to see quite a bit of the folks doing the standard jailbreaking techniques.” said Finisterre. “Literally, it’s a big iPod Touch. We’re not really breaking any new ground here.”

Security experts say that the iPad’s popularity in the marketplace will determine whether it will be a worthy target for hackers.

Quashes yet another password-bypass bug!!!

This is becoming a common occurance for the latest iPhone updates it would seem!

Apple today patched five vulnerabilities in the iPhone’s operating system, including one in a password-locking feature that’s required attention before.

iPhone OS 3.1.3, the first update since September 2009, addressed five bugs, three of which were tagged with the phrase “arbitrary code execution,” Apple-speak for a critical vulnerability. Unlike other software makers, such as Microsoft and Oracle, Apple does not rank flaws with a threat-scoring system.

Since its debut this past Tuesday, “Mass Effect 2″ has been clogging trending topics on social networks, forcing gamers to call in sick to work and even gaining the attention of Hollywood with its intense brand of action and sci-fi. But comic fans don’t necessarily have to shell out for the price of admission to see what all the futuristic fuss is about. The iPhone crowd can catch a glimpse of Dark Horse’s “Mass Effect: Redemption” as a free download on Wed., February 3rd.

My contract is up shortly, and im really wanting a new iphone, but since its so close to the 4G release date (usually July) Im not sure if i should wait for it and skip getting a newer 3GS… So i did some digging on the iPhone 4G

Last week, some enterprising fans created a visual guide to the Apple Tablet rumors. Today, the French website Nowhere Else has done something similar for the next generation iPhone. The image highlights the various rumors surrounding the next version of the iPhone (the iPhone 4G if you will) into one annotated graphic.

An OLED display, 5-megapixel camera and a release date between May and July appear to be the most likely rumors (and we agree that those all sound like very distinct possibilities). Also ranking high are rumors of a front-facing camera, dual-core processor with more RAM and a touch-sensitive case.

As for the removable battery rumor, 60% likely or not, we don’t see that happening. Apple has moved its portable line to built-in batteries; it seems unlikely to us that they would add a removable battery to the iPhone.

You can check out a larger version of the image directly at Nowhere Else. What do you think of this roundup? What features would you like to see in the next iPhone? Let us know!

iPhone 4G Rumors Visualized

Here’s a quick guide that I myself have done to gain more than 11 screens of apps on my desktop, there is no jailbreak required to do this.

1. Create 11 pages of apps by dragging apps to all pages. There can be blank spots.
2. Fill the first page & last page full of apps.
3. Drag the Voice Memos app to the very last page and last location in the bottom right. (Not on the dock)
4. Move one app up from the dock so the Voice Memos app gets bumped off. Hit the home button so they stop wiggling.
5. Hold down power button and turn off. Turn back on.

That’s it! When iPhone boots up it should create a new page. It seems the best amount is 19 pages. That way you can still see all the dots :) I’ve also heard that it doesn’t work on older firmware. I’m using 3.1.2.

Second to this, It’s working fine on both the 3G and the 3Gs as someone else has since asked me if this was limited to the 3Gs.
