Daily Tip: How to use multiple iTunes libraries on a single Windows or Mac PC

Not keen on using one iTunes library to manage several family member’s iPhone, iPod touch and iPad content and curious how multiple iTunes libraries work? While it’s not exactly obvious it is fairly easy to use multiple iTunes libraries on the same Windows or Mac PC. We’ll show you how after the break!

[Inside iTunes]

When we posted one how to manage syncing multiple iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads with a single iTunes library, many of you commented that you preferred using multiple libraries. Fair enough!

Creating multiple iTunes libraries

If you don’t already have multiple libraries here’s how to create them:

  1. Make sure iTunes isn’t running. Quit it if it is.
  2. Hold down ALT (Windows) or OPTION (Mac) and click the iTunes icon.
  3. A dialog box will pop up. Click the button that says Create Library…
  4. Browse to where you want the library to be located and give it a distinctive name (we recommend having one folder for all your libraries and then naming libraries after your devices or members of your family so they’re easy to identify later).
  5. iTunes will open with a new, empty library that can you can fill with music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, apps and other content just for the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad you want to sync it with.
  6. Repeat these steps for each additional library you want to create.

Switching libraries

To switch from one iTunes library to another:

  1. Quit iTunes if it’s running.
  2. Hold down ALT (Windows) or OPTION (Mac) and click the iTunes icon.
  3. A dialog box will pop up. Click the button that says Choose Library…
  4. A file browser will launch. Navigate to your library and choose the one you want to open.
  5. Your iTunes library will open. Plug in your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and sync away!

More

Multiple libraries are good for more than just multiple devices and family members. For example you might want a separate library for seasonal content like Christmas music that you only sync for a few weeks out of the year. Maybe you’re going on a special trip and want apps and media that you won’t sync again once you get back home. Anything that you want to keep clean and separate is a good candidate for its own iTunes library.

If you have any questions or any iTunes ninja tips of your own to share please let us know in the comments. If you’re already using multiple libraries, let us know how it’s working for you!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

White iPhone 4

In an interview on the Engadget Show yesterday Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak speculated the white iPhone 4 will be coming very soon, stating his belief manufacturing problems had been resolved and Apple would begin shipments in the near future.

Woz specifically mentioned camera issues with some of the DIY conversion kits recently circulated using leaked parts from component suppliers — something he personally experimented with himself. He went on to explain that photos taken with modded parts looked like they were “taken through cellophane” due to light leaking through the painted glass, and that he thinks Apple decided against shipping because they couldn’t find a way to fix the problem.

We told you last week that Apple started using a new painting process to help with the issues plaguing the white iPhone, which lined up with reports that the white iPhone had shown up in Best Buy and Vodafone’s ordering system, so Steve’s statements don’t seem so far off.

Do you think we could finally be seeing the mystical white iPhone 4 soon, or is it still just a pipe dream? Sound off in the comments below!

UPDATE: We altered the language slightly — seems Woz is basing his comments on rumors just like the rest of us. No special Apple co-founder info involved.

Motorola Superbowl ad targets Apple, shows no product

According to Android Central this is Motorola’s big Superbowl commercial for their new Android 3.0 Honeycomb-running Xoom tablet, and it’s targeting Apple’s iPad by once again trotting out the old canard of Apple fascism. I’m glad AC managed to sleuth that out because I’m not sure many mainstream football viewers are going to have any idea at all what this thing is about.

It sure would be fun to guess though. I’m going for Spaceballs sequel. Leave your funniest answer in the comments!

iPhone: Still not much market share, almost half the profit share

While Apple’s iPhone still only accounts for about 4% of global phone market share they now rake in roughly 50% the profit share. Asymco has charts up for the top 8 mobile phone vendors broken down by market, sales and profit share and while Google’s free Android OS has just crushed Nokia’s Symbian in overall numbers I’d much rather have Apple’s bank account. You?

TiPb checks out the best, most must-have IM/Instant Messenger apps to load up on your iPhone

Top 5 IM instant messenger apps for iPhone

Interested in knowing which are the best, most must-have instant messenger (IM) apps for your iPhone? Eager to get you chat on via AIM/MobileMe, MSN/Windows Live, Yahoo!, GoogleTalk, Facebook, MySpace, and/or Jabber but need to know which client supports what and how well? Well read on for TiPb’s top 5 most recommended IM/instant messenger clients for iPhone!

Beejive IM

Beejive is probably one of the most popular IM clients for iOS, and for good reason. It supports almost any messenger client you can think of and is completely customizable. Beejive has been making IM clients for a very long time, and it shows. I remember purchasing Beejive for my Blackberry several years ago. Even then, it was an extremely reliable choice.

It comes packed with features such as support for multiple accounts, push notifications, picture sharing, custom backgrounds and chat bubbles, and much more. I have always found it to be extremely efficient and easy to use. Most hardcore users prefer Beejive due to the amount of clients it supports. It also has the longest session option I’ve ever seen, which is 7 days (eBuddy also offers 7 day support). This means less time outs and having to re-connect.

Beejive has support for the following IM clients –

  • AIM/MobileMe
  • Facebook IM
  • Google Talk
  • Jabber
  • MSN/Windows Live
  • Myspace IM
  • Yahoo! Messenger

[$9.99 - iTunes Link]

eBuddy Pro

eBuddy is another IM client that has a pretty large user base. It boasts several great features such as themes, push notifications, picture sharing, and much more. eBuddy also offers a free version of the app that is ad supported and has fewer features. So you can always try before you buy.

When it comes to comparing eBuddy with other clients, it seems to offer about the same Beejive does. A lot of it is really going to come down to personal preference. I personally prefer the overall layout and setup of Beejive but if Beejive wasn’t around, I’d have no issues using eBuddy as my full time messaging client.

eBuddy has support for the following IM clients –

  • AIM
  • MSN/WIndows Live
  • Google Talk
  • ICQ
  • Hyve
  • Yahoo! Messenger
  • Facebook Chat
  • Myspace IM

[$4.99 - iTunes Link]

IM+

While eBuddy and Beejive have rather large user bases, so does IM+. These are probably the three most used clients for iPhone users. IM+ offers just as much as the previous two. And again, it’ll probably come down to personal preference. It boasts most of the same features of the previous two but also has some other features that make it unique such as viewing Twitter feeds and advanced chat histories. I like the fact that you can access chat history on your device or on the web. This can be extremely convenient for people who need to save chat histories for work reasons.

IM+ also offers a free “lite” version if you’d like to try before you buy. It supports the following IM clients -

  • AIM
  • MSN/Windows Live
  • Google Talk
  • Facebook Chat
  • Myspace IM
  • ICQ
  • Twitter
  • Jabber
  • Skype

[$9.99 - iTunes Link]

Verbs

A lot of people may be asking why I’m including a client that doesn’t support half the features the big 3 support. The answer to that for me is simple; Verbs looks like a client Apple themselves wrote. The UI itself is simply gorgeous. As of now, Verbs doesn’t support the feature set the others boast, but I think it’s a client to keep our eye on.

If the developers of Verbs can add support for several more clients and integrate a lot of the same powerful features, they’ll do very well. Currently Verbs only supports local notifications, meaning if you close out the app from multitasking, you won’t receive notifications. This is what’s keeping me from using it on a daily basis. If they can issue updates to better the app in a timely manner, I think they’ll acquire a pretty good sized user base. It’s also a bit cheaper than some of the other options.

Verbs currently supports the following IM clients –

  • AIM/MobileMe
  • Google Talk

[$2.99 - iTunes Link]

Kik Messenger

Kik Messenger has an extremely easy to use interface and push is extremely quick. But there’s a catch. Kik is proprietary. The other user must be using Kik messenger also. They provide cross-platform support for iOS, Android, and Blackberry. The downside is that you won’t be able to link AIM and some other popular messaging clients. If your messaging needs are small and the few people you need to talk to have Kik (or you can get them to download it), this will work just fine. Apps like Whatsapp Messenger and Ping! also offer the same proprietary system as well. It’ll really come down to which you prefer to use the most (and probably which one your friends use).

[Free - iTunes Link]

Bonus: Official IM apps

If you only use one IM/chat service and for some reason really want the “official” iPhone app for that service, you’re in luck — there are several in the app store:

  • AIM AOL Instant Messenger comes in 2 versions, free with adds and cheap without adds. [Free - iTunes link] and [$2.99 - iTunes link]
  • Facebook has built-in chat as well as feed, messages, places, groups, events, photos, and more. [Free - iTunes link]
  • Myspace gives you access to chat as well as updates, photos, comments, messages and more. [Free - iTunes link]
  • Skype not only lets you use Skype chat but also make VoIP and even video calls. [Free - iTunes link]
  • Twitter is technically less IM and more DM (Direct Message) but if you want to chat in 140 characters this is the app. [Free - iTunes link]
  • Windows Live Messenger with support for Windows Live, Y!, and Facebook, as well as social feeds for Facebook, Flickr, and Myspace, and access to Hotmail. [Free - iTunes link]

Netgear CEO Patrick Lo has spoken out over Apple’s closed ecosystem and the ego of Steve Jobs. Speaking at a lunch in Sydney Australia, Lo questioned the future of Apple’s closed system, in the face of mounting competition from Google’s “Open” Android operating system.

Once Steve Jobs goes away, which is probably not far away, then Apple will have to make a strategic decision on whether to open up the platform. Ultimately a closed system just can’t go that far … If they continue to close it and let Android continue to creep up then it’s pretty difficult as I see it.
Lo also went on to criticize Steve Jobs over his thoughts on Flash.
What’s the reason for him to trash Flash? There’s no reason other than ego.
Lo was asked if he had spoken to Steve Jobs over his concerns but replied “Steve Jobs doesn’t give me a minute!”

Lo did not stop with Apple, he also claimed that Microsoft had fallen too far behind with the Windows Phone 7 platform and that it was now game over.

Strong views, but are they fair? Do Apple need to open up the platform to continue the growth needed to see off Android? Do Apple care about the iPhone being the number one selling smartphone? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Jailbreak developer chpwn is at it again and plans on releasing his new tweak VoiceActivator hopefully this week. VoiceActivator will allow you to take full control of your iPhone or iPod touch’s voice control feature. It will allow users to launch apps, open URLs, use Activator actions all within the standard voice control feature.

As of now all we can tell you is he plans on releasing it sometime this coming week through Cydia and we are yet to hear anything as far as pricing goes but it should be well worth the money if you are jailbroken and have a lot of apps and many things you do daily that causes you to tap through folders and menus. If you want to follow to the status of this tweak, follow @chpwn on Twitter.

We want to hear from all you jailbreakers on who is interested in this new tweak. Also do you think Apple should have already included this as part of iOS out of the box or do you think they will include it in the next generation of iOS? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below! Check out a video of this awesome new tweak after the break!

iPhone Bugs: Facebook status updates not entering live feed, iPhone privacy settings missing

Some Facebook for iPhone users are experiencing two rather annoying bugs — Facebook does not send their status updates to their friends’ live feeds, and Facebook for iPhone seems to be missing from all users’ privacy settings. Details after the break!

Facebook for iPhone status update bug

When a use who is experiencing this bug updates their status with the Facebook for iPhone app, the status only appears on their wall and not on their friends’ live feeds. Meaning, in order for one of the user’s friends to see the status, they must go directly to the user’s wall – which most people don’t do. An irritating bug to say the least.

Workaround

  • Facebook’s mobile site and touch site work just fine. So you can use them until Facebook fixes this problem.
  • Use a different app to post Facebook status updates

Facebook for iPhone missing privacy settings

The other issue with the Facebook for iPhone app has to do with privacy. When you add an app to your Facebook account, it gets added to the list of apps you use in your privacy settings. It is here that you can see what information any given app has access to, as well as remove any ability that you do not approve of. The problem is that the Facebook for iPhone app is not included in the list. This means that no one knows for certain what permissions Facebook for iPhone has.

Workaround

  • Stop using Facebook for iPhone (not an acceptable solution, Facebook needs to fix this!)

Are you experiencing either of these bugs? If so, have you discovered any other fixes or workarounds? Are you using the mobile or touch site, or have you installed a different app to post status updates? What are your thoughts on Facebook for iPhone being non-existent in your privacy settings? Sound off below!

For those who haven’t been following it, iPhone Jailbreaker George Hotz (Geohot) is being sued by Sony for hacking their PS3. It’s not new for companies to take action against hackers. Every time Apple updates iOS they try to close Jailbreak exploits and they even lobbied the US government to try and make sure Jailbreaking wasn’t granted a DMCA exception (Apple didn’t get their way and jailbreaking was given an exception.

While Apple went after the entire process and asked it be ruled illegal, Sony is going after one person in particular, George Hotz. After recently releasing his 3.55 jailbreak for Playstation 3 users, Sony rewarded his efforts by applying for a TRO (temporary restraining order), which was recently granted. As they continue to go back and forth, Geohot has issued a statement to Sony on his own webpage.

Note to Sony:

It’s apparent you don’t care about your reputation with consumers, and I can almost understand your point there. Few people consider buying a TV or laptop a moral choice, and the consumer base is quite large. But talented developers are in much shorter supply, and take it from one personally, who you choose to code for is much more of a moral choice. The programmers you will one day be looking to hire are the ones reading the tech news sites right now.

And they will remember.

I’m not sure what this means for iOS users at this point. If Sony succeeds in their case against Geohot, it’s unclear what if any precedents will be set in terms of other companies suing Jailbreakers. Also, whether or not Geohot will remain an active part of the jailbreak community is uncertain. Seeing as jailbreaking iOS is not illegal, I can’t image he would abandon both communities. One thing is clear, the case will definitely be interesting to follow. If Sony gets their way, will that lead to Apple starting a fire with our very own jailbreak community again? Or has Apple mellowed and Sony taken the lead in anti-community action? Sound off in the comments!

TiPb.com Picks of the Week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

Alli’s pick: Words With Friends

Words With Friends, is simply the same Scrabble we all grew up playing on a board. It scores you automatically, and with push notifications, will even tell you when it’s your turn to play.

I have questioned some of the words it accepts, but for the most part it uses the lexicon found in any traditional Scrabble dictionary. The main screen is divided into games where it is your turn (top), games awaiting your opponent (center), and finished games (bottom).

While there is a free version of Words With Friends, if you are a true devoté of Scrabble, you will want to spend the $2.99 for the version that doesn’t make you pause after each play to view ads. The full version also allows you unlimited games, which is especially nice if some of your opponents only make one or two moves a week. (WWF also has an HD version available for iPad.)

[$2.99 - iTunes link]

Andrew’s pick: Navigon Now

If you’re a fan of Navigon MobileNavigator for your iPhone then you’ll definitely want to check out Navigon Now, a great single-purpose app made to assist iPhone users who use Navigon as their GPS navigation system. Navigon Now is another one of those one-trick pony apps that has limited functionality and isn’t feature-rich, but at the same time is extremely useful and has become one of those apps I couldn’t live without.

If you’ve ever tried to manually enter an address in Navigon then you already know it can get a little finicky, involving multiple pages and steps before actually routing your destination. The app is very simple and has just one function by way of letting users enter any standard street address and launch directly into Navigon to route your destination — it even recognizes a copied address and pastes it into the input field upon launching the app! So if you’re in Maps, just copy the address, launch Navigon Now and it will open Navigon and navigate to that address. Navigon Now makes the overall process of navigating to any given address in Navigon much easier. Also check out TomTom Now which, you guessed it, does the same exact thing but for the TomTom GPS app.

[$1.99 - iTunes link]

Brian’s pick: DirecTV

My pick of the week is the DirecTV app. I recently made the switch over to DirecTV and I’ve got to say I have loved having their app on my iPhone. I always seem to be out when a show that I have been waiting weeks to watch airs for the first time. My problem is I tend to forget to set a recording for it because I figure I will be home to watch the show. Well now if I forget I can simply launch the DirecTV app and set my receiver to record the show. You can also browse shows and movies using their simple interface. If you have DirecTV there is no reason to not have this free application on your iPhone to help you never miss a show or movie again!

[Free - iTunes Link]

Chris V’s pick: Science Mobile

I recently downloaded the free app form the American Association for the Advancement of Science. They publish a weekly professional journal, SCIENCE, that is pretty well known among researcher (it has one of the highest impact factors out there, up there with Nature and PNAS). They have recently come out with a great app, called “Science Mobile”, that bundles a few nice features for people interested in the scientific fields. With the app, you can read summaries and abstracts from the most recent issue of Science Magazine, email yourself full links, get news clippings from ScienceNOW, and access various multimedia resources, including podcasts. While it doesn’t give you a free subscription to the magazine, it is a useful app for people who want to keep on top of things, or people who do have a subscription but don’t always find the time to look through each issue. In addition, if you are looking for a job in the field, it contains job opportunities from the website Science Careers.

AS the iPad and iPhone develop, I hope to see more and more professional services, apps, and features like this that would benefit people beyond the Busienss/Tech areas. Other apps (like Inkling) have started to look into the school/student area, but I hope that we continue to see more for the research professional/professor! But that’s for the future. Now, Science Mobile is a great way to start keeping abreast on issues and cutting edge research in just about every scientific field.

[Free - iTunes link]

George’s pick: TVCatchUp Web App (UK Only)

TVCatchUp is a free service that allows you to watch free Live TV on your iOS device. The service requires a free sign up, and will stream, most of the 30 FreeView Channels.

With a simple user interface, all you have to do is select the channel you want, and it will start streaming, in high quality, whether you are on wifi or 3G.

So when all you have is your iPhone or iPad for entertainment, use the TVCatchUp web app and you can watch all the TV you want, wherever you want.

[iphone.tvcatchup.com]

Leanna’s pick: ArtStudio for iPad

I am by no means an artist, but I still enjoy drawing and painting with ArtStudio. Combined with my Ten One Design Pogo Sketch], it is more enjoyable to draw with this app than with real art materials because I can easily undo my many mistakes and not have the mess associated with paint. ArtStudio does a fantastic job of looking authentic with its customizable brushes and layers. And for non-artists like myself, there are lessons that teach you how to draw. If you or your child love to draw, check this one out!

[$2.99 - iTunes link]

Rene’s pick: Apple Store App

Apple’s App Store app, tragic icon aside, is one of those apps I tend to ignore… until I need it. No, not for shopping, I still ignore that. However, whenever I have a problem with my iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Mac I go run to it like a victim in a horror movie. SAVE ME!

Then, with just a couple taps, I have my local Apple Store loaded up, I can see when the Genius Bar has a free appointment, I can book it, and I can have it remind me when I need to be there. It’s part convenience, part location, and all awesome.

(Yeah, it’s disappointingly US App Store only but since, like I said, I don’t care to shop with it I just grabbed it and it works fine for store appointments in Canada anyway).

How

Interesting article over at SFGate detailing how Steve Jobs studies early Sony product development culture and Zen-like approach to design:

“It was very nearly fetishistic, in fact — he even had a collection of Sony letterhead and marketing materials,” laughs Deutschman. “Sony was a company that Jobs instinctively admired and saw as model from the very beginning. So it’s been an interesting transformation over time, to see Apple supplant Sony as the center of the consumer technology universe.”

Early Sony would wait, miss first-mover advantage, take their time and only release breakthrough, revolutionary products that could own a category, like Trinitron televisions and the Walkman. That Sony has faded away. (I covered this year’s CES Sony presser for Android Central and… yeah, it wasn’t good). But Apple under Steve Jobs has taken its place:

“I was at a party last night in central Tokyo that happened to have a bunch of twentysomething guests,” [Douglas Krone, CEO of Dynamism and Gizmine] says. “Every time I saw something glowing, it was an iPhone. It was a chilling display of dominance — five years ago, you would have seen 99.9 percent Japanese handsets and 0.1 percent Nokias and MotoRAZRs. Softbank’s flagship stores look almost comical now, with rows and rows of iPhones broken only by the occasional row of iPads, in a space that used to have a wide array of handsets.”

It’s often been said that Apple and Jobs build the products they themselves want to have and that they’re not as concerned with market as they are with “denting the universe”. They’ve had challenges, including the MobileMe launch and the iPhone 4 antenna kerfuffle, but measured against iPod, iPhone, iPad, iTunes, the resurgence of Mac, and the growth of Apple Retail the successes have been stunning.

The only question is whether or not Apple can keep it up or if they’ll stray the way once-dominant Sony did?

Is the new Apple TV worth $99? Now that it has reached that magic price point it’s a question we’re being asked more frequently than ever. Being part of the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad iOS family means it just works with the devices you already have but being part of Apple means it doesn’t work at all with other devices and formats. Does the good outweigh the bad? That’s the topic for this episode of TiPb TV!

Rene and I go over the basic hardware (HDMI yes, component or anything else, no!), content services like Netflix (US and Canada only but expanding), iTunes (TV Show rentals are US only), and YouTube, as well as streaming your own content from Mac or Windows via Home Sharing and now with iOS 4.2, your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad content via AirPlay. There’s still no word on Hulu for Apple TV, and no support for AVI, MKV and other file formats… unless you Jailbreak and install XBMC.

So is the new Apple TV worth $99 of your hard earned money? Watch the video above and let us know what you think in the comments!

TiPb TV 15: Is Apple TV worth it?

Author: Georgia | Filed under: TiPb TV, Video, apple tv, tipbvideo

RovioMobile have announced the next version of their hit game Angry Birds, coming to the App Store in March. The new game will not be a true sequel, but will be a licensed game based on the tie in with 20th Century Fox’s upcoming animated film Rio.

So far all they’ve done is post a YouTube trailer and tease it on Twitter. Rio is a film about rare birds being kidnapped by other birds and is all about them escaping to freedom. Therefore we assume in this game, you will be up against birds rather than the nasty pigs that steal your eggs.

The film Rio is due to be released on April 15th but the new game will be available sometime in March. No exact date yet, but we will let you know as soon as we hear. While you wait patiently, take a look at the video teaser after the break, then let us know what you think in the comments!

3DBoard bringing 3D home screens to iPhone [Jailbreak]

3DBoard uses the iPhones accelerometer and gyroscope to present a “3D” view of the Springboard/Home Screen icons and it looks pretty nifty. Sure it’s pure eye candy and not as functional a tweak as SBSettings or LockInfo, but cool has to count for something, right?

It’s coming to Cydia soon and will cost $4. Anyone going to grab it?

Verizon: Existing customers can order iPhone 4 starting Feb. 3 at 3am EST

Verizon has updated their website and started sending out mailings confirming that existing customers can start ordering the Verizon iPhone on February 3, 2011 at 3am EST.

They’ve even got a handy timer right on the front of verizon.com to help you countdown every last minute before you can order.

Now all we need is official postings on all the pricing plans and options and, of course, availability of VCast and other Verizon-specific apps on the App Store…

Anyone waiting up late — or getting up early — to make sure you snag one?
