Screens VNC app for iPhone, iPad hits version 1.5

Screens, the gorgeous VNC app for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad by Edovia has just hit version 1.5 and it’s a great update. In addition to speed boosts for both Windows and Mac, and the usual bug fixes, it adds:

  • Revamped and more responsive UI,
  • Added Hebrew and Korean keyboard support,
  • Fullscreen modes (full, partial and off). Use a 3 finger tap to toggle between modes,
  • iPhone: Keyboard toggle button now exclusively on modifiers toolbar,
  • iPad: New Grid view. Great for those who have a lot of screens to flick through,
  • Privacy: Display a screenshot, a blank screen or an image from your photo albums when disconnecting from a remote computer,
  • Screens Connect status now available in the settings,
  • Now supports url schemes (see Getting Started Guide for details),

I’ve used a lot of VNC clients and while each has its strengths and weaknesses, the sheer thoughtfulness of Screens’ UI keeps bringing me back. There’s nothing that shuts up a neck-bearded iPad hater faster than whipping up Screens, connecting to a couple Mac, Windows, or Linux boxes, and doing it with style.

If you try out the update, let us know what you think.

TiPb checks out the most must-have cases to best show off — and protect — your new white iPhone 4

Top 5 cases to show off your white iPhone 4

BodyGuardz Protective Skins

Mophie juice pack plus - Top 5 cases to show off your white iPhone 4What’s a better case than almost no case at all? With BodyGuardz protective skins you get the next best thing to naked, “made from the same material that is used to shield the front of automobiles from stones and other abrasive elements.” (And we’ve tested to prove it). If you want to enjoy your precious new white iPhone almost the way Jony Ive intended, this is the way to go. [TiPb store link]

Also try:

  • InvisibleShield, for those who prefer this brand of film. [TiPb store link]

Apple Bumpers

Apple Bumper - Top 5 cases to show off your white iPhone 4While protective films cover the glass, bumpers cover and defend the antenna and give you enough of an edge you can put your iPhone down without having to worry about it coming in contact with any potentially damaging surfaces. If you’re in a low signal area they’ll also stop you from “holding it wrong“. Plus, the black, white, green, blue, orange, and pink colors look really sweet on the white iPhone — there’s a reason all of Apple’s initial bumper art was shown off on white. [Apple Store link]

Also try:

  • Element Case Vapor Case for high end, hypercar style bumper-ing [Element Case link]
  • Mobi Bumper is so inexpensive you can easily justify getting one each of the clear, gray, pink, and purple [TiPb store link]

Case-Mate Chrome Barely There Skin Case

CaseMate Chrome - Top 5 cases to show off your white iPhone 4You knew I had to pic this, right? If you’re worried about the white iPhone 4 being 0.2mm thicker than the black iPhone 4, stop. The Case-Mate Chrome fits the white iPhone 4 perfectly. And sure it covers up a lot of the back… but it does it with chrome and, frankly, it looks stunning! It remains one of my favorite all-time cases and with good reason — it protects my iPhone while giving me unconstrained use of the screen and big opening around the dock and other ports so all my other accessories, like car chargers, fit. Verizon has issued a written response to Massachusetts Congressman Ed Markey’s call for answers on the recent revelations that phones may provide your location data without your knowledge. The letter written by Peter B. Davidson, who is the Senior Vice President of Federal Government Relations at Verizon, goes into detail on how Verizon goes to great lengths to inform and protect its customers from revealing their location data to third parties.

Verizon now plan on taking a further step to include a sticker on every phone that it sells; warning users that it could track location data. The removable sticker will be placed on the screen of the device. Verizon say that the labels will start to appear very soon. We assume that this will include all models of the iPhone too.

Apple has already released a Q&A to address its customer concerns; Apple and Google are still due to appear at a hearing in May to explain their roles in the situation in more detail.

TiPb.com Picks of the Week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

4oD – @chrisoldroyd

This weeks pick is hot off the press and is a TV catchup application for UK readers. Channel 4 has had an online catch up service for a while now but it uses evil Flash technology!

Luckily Channel 4 has seen fit to launch an iPad app called 4oD that now gives us access to the past 30 days of shows as well as select complete seasons. As mentioned, this is UK only due to archaic media laws; but let’s not get started with that one!

Anyway what more could you want from an app that currently has the second season of “The Inbetweeners” ready to stream.

[Free - iTunes Link]

Word Search – @skeetobite

My pick of the week is actually my daughters pick of the week. At 7 years old (almost 8, as she reminds me) she enjoys playing with the iPad quite a bit. Some of the games I have reviewed are ones that she plays, but she also loves word search games. She used to play these all the time in restaurants, but when we saw this for the iPad, we just had to try it. She loves to choose the animal word lists, but you can choose from random “English” words, to SAT words, to names, weapons, and even foreign language words. I don’t know how large the actual dictionaries are, but we haven’t have much overlap.

The puzzles are fun, and selecting the words is easy (just using your finger to trace them). Unfortunately it isn’t a universal binary, but there is an iPhone version as well. I wish they had ways for people to complete the same puzzle (as a race) but they do time you to complete a puzzle. It’s a fun game for kids, that can also serve as a useful distract for adults.

[$1.99 - iTunes link]

Cadence and Cadence.FM – @andrewwray

Cadence is an incredibly brilliant music app that plays selected tracks at your desired BPM (beats per minute) rate. It’s the perfect app to fire up when you’re at the gym or working out because it knows which songs match up to your workout speed. Cadence allows you to use your own iPod library as well as the streaming radio station powered by SoundCloud. The app taps into Echonest to pull BPM data for your own music if you don’t already have the data in your iTunes library. They also have a nice BPM analyzer for Mac and Windows that will scan your iTunes library and update BPM information accordingly for syncing to your iPhone.

Additional features include a nice swipe-to-control screen that lets you navigate music using gestures. This is really convenient during heavy workouts where you can quickly jump to the next song or raise the BPM level when things start to get intense. When you use Echonest as the BPM data source you can even edit this information on-the-fly, right from your iPhone! They also offer a lower priced app called Cadence.FM that just streams music from SoundCloud without the option of using music stored on the iPhone itself. If you’ve been looking for a powerful workout app to help keep you going then this is the one for you. I’ll be giving out promo codes for Cadence and Cadence.FM throughout the day, so make sure you’re following both myself and @TiPb so you can get it for free!

[$5.99 - iTunes Link]

Comic Life – @reneritchie

If you’ve ever used Comic Life on the Mac, then you’re probably not even reading the rest of the sentence but have already leapt over the App Store and bought Comic Life for iPad. So we’ll just assume anyone left following these words hasn’t heard of the quintessential photo sequencing and captioning app, the one that put the fun in functional. You poor, joyless few, here it is in a nutshell:

You take your photos. You use them to create comic book-style panels and captions, effects and story flows, and then you show them off to your friends and family and make them think you are way more talented at sequential art than you have any right to claim.

Really, your kids, pets, and assorted photo subjects deserve to be the stars of the next Planetary, the next We3, the next Watchmen, the next Kickass (well, er, no, maybe not that but you get the idea.)

Go grab it true believers, and make with the mighty marvelous masterworks!

FaceTime for iPad 2 – @llofte

When FaceTime on the iPhone was released, I thought it was cool and all, but never used it. Even when my daughter was born and the grandparents wanted to see her over video chat, we always opted for iChat over FaceTime. Since the release of the iPad 2, however, I have yet to open iChat. Using FaceTime on the big screen makes it easy for my daughter to recognize faces and show genuine interest. It is also very easy to allow her to “chase” my parents around the room while I keep the iPad just barely out of her reach. The cameras on the iPad 2 have received a lot of bad rap, but I am so grateful they are there for FaceTime.

NBA Jam – @ch__ad (Reader’s Choice)

NBA Jam is a fun, fast-paced sport game. It is pretty over the top when it comes to slam dunks and the fact that you are able to shove the other players to steal the ball. In my personal opinion, it is my favorite 2-on-2 NBA game out there, although, it’s probably the least realistic.

You can unlock old NBA starters like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. There are in game challenges to unlock different things within the game such as players and balls, and it is not a game you can just blow right through because some teams are pretty difficult.

[$4.99 - iTunes link]

Infinity Blade – @GeorgiaTiPb

If you’re not familiar with Infinity Blade… wait, everyone is familiar with Infinity Blade, right? It’s the hack and slash game with the Epic Unreal 3 Engine where you play succeeding generations of warriors, carving your way through enemy after enemy, mastering armor and swords and rings, until you stand victorious over the deathless kings themselves? Ring a bell?

Maybe not. I never really got into Infinity Blade until iPad 2 came out. Then I couldn’t put it down. The 3D graphics and textures are just flawless and while the game play is limited, the animations are incredibly smooth and the mastering all the gear is a nice addition, as is the generational element.

If you haven’t tried it yet, and have an iPad 2, give it a try and tell me what you think. (And if you don’t have an iPad, don’t worry — it’s a universal binary so you can buy once and play on all your iOS devices!)

[$5.99 - iTunes link]

BBC iPlayer for iPad (UK Only) – @JorjLim

BBC iPlayer for iPad is an amazing way of catching-up with BBC shows. The app has a complete list of all the shows available, which you can filter by ‘genre’, ‘date’ or ‘channel’. There is even a timeline view so you can check what show was on at the time.

After watching several programmes, the BBC suggests more shows you may enjoy as well. You can even save shows as favourites, and it will show you the latest episodes when they get released. Most shows come with subtitles and a high quality option.

Personally, I use the app for TV shows, but there is a Radio catch up option as well. It’s a perfect way to catch up on all your favourite BBC shows, when you don’t have a computer handy.

Your pick?

You’re part of the team as well, so we will be choosing one reader to make a submission each week! Sn0wbreeze 2.6.1 brings untethered Jailbreak to Verizon iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.7

ih8sn0w has just released sn0wbreeze 2.6.1, an untethered Jailbreak for the Verizon iPhone 4 on the latest iOS 4.2.7 firmware.

I originally ordered a Verizon iPhone 4 for my upcoming SHSH blobs dumper. Then I + many others on twitter realized that an untether was not available for 4.2.7. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been sick and didn’t do much, but today I was finally able to get the strength to work on this Verizon untether. Since i0n1c’s payload is not easily reversible, I went to previous exploits. After trying, pod2g’s + posixninja’s kernel exploit for 4.2.x is STILL in 4.2.7! After some more work, I managed to get this thing untethered. So, this new release includes that new payload to untether + jailbreak 4.2.7.

So if you’re a Verizon iPhone 4 user on the latest 4.2.7 firmware, you can now jailbreak untethered thanks to ih8sn0w. If you go ahead and use this, let us know how it works out in the comments! If you need any help, head over to our jailbreak forum!

Apple headed to the iCloud for iOS 5?

More rumors have come to light about Apple and the iCloud brand, including DigitalDaily‘s sources confirming the name acquisition and AppleInsider hearing that it’s already being used internally for iOS 5 (and Mac OS X Lion).

According to people familiar with the matter, Apple is prepping beta versions of both iOS 5.0 and Mac OS X Lion ahead of its annual developers conference that integrate with a service dubbed “iCloud,” enabling users to sync and store much of the same information they currently can with the company’s existing MobileMe service, such as bookmarks, email, contacts and iCal events.

Regarding the name, Apple looked to be securing [http://www.tipb.com/tag/islate/] last year before ultimately announcing iPad, so as always we’ll only know for sure when Apple announces it. The service itself remains a mystery as well.

Would it subsume MobileMe? Would it include media? There have been strings found for a social-esque photo/media stream service, and rumors persist that Apple is entering the streaming music/digital locker space as well. Would you be able to store anything there, like Amazon Cloud Drive, DropBox, or Google Docs? Or would Apple restrict it to iTunes-purchased content only in order to appease the record labels and movie industry?

If it merely allowed media re-downloads the way the App Store allows app re-downloads it would be a good first step. Streaming would be a better one. Subscription would be the end-game.

For sync, allowing apps (especially games) to persist state across iOS (and potentially Mac) would be huge. The above-mentioned media/photo sync/sharing as well. And iDisk has demanded a Dropbox-style rejuvenation for years. Likewise, mirroring the Mac’s ability to backup and sync down Settings from the cloud could pave the way to iTunes tether-free device activation.

So what would all that, or any functional subset of that cost? AppleInsider thinks it could be free and used as a loss-leader to drive further iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Mac sales. While Apple has done “just above break-even” businesses before, like iTunes and the App Store, it’s hard to see them doing anything for “free”. Perhaps, like Find My iPhone for MobileMe recently, there will be a base of free services and a set of paid, premium services on top of them (the Google or DropBox model).

If the free tier included iTunes media re-downloads and basic Settings sync, that could be compelling enough for most users. But what then would the premium version require to convert them to paying customers?

Apple headed to the iCloud for iOS 5?

Author: Rene Ritchie | Filed under: Ipod Touch, Rumors, iPad, iPhone, icloud, ios 5

This year is turning out to be a big one for Apple. They recently passed Microsoft in net income earnings at $5.99 billion compared to $5.23 billion from Microsoft — mainly due to iOS devices like the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 driving sales and raising profit margins. The iPhone, iPad and iPod touch currently represent roughly 65% of overall sales for Apple, with the Verizon iPhone helping push demand even further as Android growth seems to be at a plateau.

Apple and Verizon had a very successful launch of the iPhone 4, which allowed the iPhone to expand its market share that was previously held back by its prolonged carrier exclusivity with AT&T [...] some of that growth came at the expense of Android operating system

Apple has now edged out HTC, Motorola and RIM as the third-largest smartphone maker in the US with a 14% share of sales, and they don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. They just released the white iPhone 4 with reports of lines forming at Apple Stores — all for a device that’s already been on the market for 10 months, just in a different color. And with WWDC 2011 just around the corner for Apple to reveal iOS 5 to the masses, it seems they have nowhere to go but up from here.

But can the iPhone and iPad help sustain Apple’s growth given how determined the competition is at beating them in the smartphone and tablet markets? Sound off in the comments below!

Patently Apple has uncovered another very interesting Apple Patent application. This time it is an integrated Fitness Center app that it has been working on for quite some time. Nike also appear to have had some involvement in the development as one illustration lists “The Nike Training Club Class”.

The app covers all aspects of a workout including stats gathered from smart equipment as well as a unique social networking element that works within a particular fitness center or city limits. The app will help you find workout buddies or work as a motivational tool.

Apple’s patent describes the possibility that the iPhone will one day include a single, seamless application that will introduce new customers to a fitness center and motivate these new customers to keep returning to the fitness center as active members.
This is an interesting discovery and if Apple gets it right, it could be a fantastic feature to interest consumers and health clubs across the board. The app store already has a lot of great fitness apps; we have just revealed our top 5. Apple would have to come up with something a bit different to compete with these; if anyone can do that, Apple can!

iPhone Live 148: White out

Author: Rene Ritchie | Filed under: iphone live

South Park started out season 15 with an episode that makes fun of Apple on multiple levels including the recent negative press they’ve received around the location tracking bug.

The episode is called “HUMANCENTiPAD” and is about Kyle being tracked down by Apple to be used in a hilariously disgusting new product that Kyle unknowingly agreed to volunteer for by not reading the terms and conditions of the latest iTunes update that he accepted.

Check out the video after the break! This particular clip is safe for work. To watch the entire NSFW episode, head on over to South Park Studios. (Flash is required to watch video).

Yes, you can Jailbreak the white iPhone 4

We’re answering the questions we’re getting most often, so bear with us while we let everyone no that yes indeed, you can Jailbreak the white iPhone 4 — it’s still an iPhone 4 on current(ish) firmware after all.

Given that iPad 2 still isn’t Jailbroken, it’s a fair question to ask, so I put it to the test. My white iPhone 4 shipped with iOS 4.3.1 and I had no trouble jailbreaking either that or 4.3.2 once I updated. I don’t have CDMA here, so I can’t test the Verizon iPhone on 4.2.7, but if you’ve had luck with that, let us know.

If you need more information or extra help, here are your links:

iOS 4.3.2 (AT&T/GSM) Jailbreak (untethered)

iOS 4.2.6 (Verizon) Jailbreak (untethered)

The Dooney & Bourke Pouch for iPhone is a great case for the lady who is looking for something fashionable and practical to carry her iPhone in. This multifunctional pouch works as both a wallet and iPhone case.

This pouch is much larger than your average case and is designed to not only carry your iPhone, but replace your wallet. The inside flap has 3 card slots and there are pockets in the front and back of the pouch. The main compartment is big enough to hold additional items with your iPhone, such as make-up, cash, and earphones. Because the pouch is bigger than the iPhone, it is also possible to have another case, like a bumper or skin case, on your iPhone and it still fit inside the pouch. For some, the extra large pocket will be a welcomed feature, and for others, it will be a frustrating amount of empty space. The Dooney & Bourke Pouch is also equipped with a leather wrist strap, but it is easily removable if you prefer to toss the case into your purse without the strap.

The exterior of the Dooney & Bourke Pouch is made out of a durable nylon material with leather trim. The coffee color is dark brown and branded with large “Dooney & Bourke” lettering. The black and gray version is gray with Dooney & Bourke’s signature “DB” in black. The interior is lined with a material that isn’t exactly soft, but won’t scratch your iPhone either. The flap over the large pocket magnetically and securely snaps closed.

I find the Dooney & Bourke Pouch to be a great option when I’m looking to minimize the amount of items I’m carrying around. If I’m wearing an outfit without pockets and do not wish to carry around a purse, I grab this pouch, add my ID, credit card, random cash, and iPhone, and head out the door.

The Dooney & Bourke Pouch for iPhone is available in the TiPb Accessory Store.

Pros

  • Extra pockets for ID, credit cards, receipts, etc.
  • Big pouch has room for other items in addition to iPhone
  • Compatible with thin cases
  • Removable leather wrist strap
  • Magnetic snap closure
  • Fashionable

Cons

  • Big pouch seems a bit awkward with only a (case-free) iPhone inside (too much extra space)
  • Interior is not very soft
