Yes, you can send files to iOS devices from the beta Messages app that Apple recently released. That much is obvious, as it only makes sense to be able to send photos, sound files, text files, and the like.

What’s a bit stranger is the fact that you can send virtually any type of file from your Mac to an iOS device via Messages.

But don’t get your hopes up too high. There is still a limit as to what you can do with said files in iOS’ Messages app once you receive them…(...)

Believe it or not, there are actually several reasons why a person would want to export their iPhone’s text messages to a shareable file. Maybe they need them as evidence in a criminal case, or want to save a memorable conversation.

But the iPhone doesn’t give you an easy way to save your text messages. Luckily, as usual, we have a jailbreak tweak to help us out with this problem. Introducing the new Messages2PDF application…(...)

If you’re looking for a jailbreak tweak that embeds your contact photos into your native Messages app, there’s a couple of options. There’s Copic, which adds photos to multiple applications, as well as other apps like ChatPic.

Today we’ll add another one to the pile with xMessages. The utility, which recently appeared in Cydia, takes the images from your contact list and applies them to your messaging threads in the default Messages app…(...)

RIM’s new CEO Thorsten Heins may have inherited a sinking ship, but he seems determined to explore all avenues in his attempt to find an escape route for the ailing Canadian firm.

Having previously been very keen to keep its BlackBerry Messenger crown jewel as a key feature that is exclusive to its hardware, BlackBerry smartphones may not be the only ones to support it some time in the future. RIM’s new CEO outlined his company’s openness to such a move during an interview with CrackBerry.

If RIM was to license its SMS-like instant messaging system to third parties then it could stript the firm’s handsets of arguably their biggest feature…(...)

The current trend of finding ways to get icons on an iOS device’s Home screen with the intent of creating shortcuts for actions is nothing new. It was originally one of the big jailbreak advantages, and now it’s back. This time, you don’t need to jailbreak anything.

QuickContact is the latest in a long line of apps that offer the user a way to create shortcuts on the Home screen, and now sending SMS messages and making phone calls are the order of the day.

The best part about this is the fact it’s not actually an app at all, but rather a web app.(...)

Mark Zuckerberg and company just released a standalone iOS app — the first since the original Facebook app — for Facebook’s messaging service. For those wondering where this is coming from, the company acquired a messaging start-up firm earlier this year named Beluga.

It appears that Facebook is beginning to get serious about the messaging platform its CEO unveiled last Fall. Facebook Messenger will allow you to send and keep track of Facebook messages and group messages in real time…(...)

Apple’s wireless carrier partners were apparently just as surprised as we were when Apple unveiled its new messaging client, iMessage, at yesterday’s WWDC keynote. Reportedly, Apple didn’t bother to give carriers a heads up that they were introducing a new, media-rich messaging client before the actual presentation to the public.

Wireless carriers are the ones that will actually be handling the transfer of messages/photos/videos in iMessage over 3G. Apple demonstrated its classic attitude by not even bothering to give carriers a heads up about iMessage. What Apple wants, Apple gets.(...)

iOS 5 continues to amaze us. The amount of customization that now exists at the system level almost rivals what a jailbroken iPhone can do.

Thanks to the shiny new Notification Center, you can customize the way incoming push notifications look in iOS 5. You can customize how many notifications display on your lockscreen, and you can even toggle the lockscreen view on and off(...)

iOS 5 will include an all-new messaging service across the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The system has a look and feel a lot like the text message app in iOS for the iPhone, and comes with a BBM-style delivery and read receipts, real-time typing indications and looks really great.

Messages are pushed across all iOS devices and since it’s all cross-device, you can pick up on the conversation right where you left off when switching from your iPhone to your iPad or iPod touch. The system, of course, will use the new notifications system in iOS 5. Tapping on the notification brings you straight to the new messaging interface, letting the recipient see right when you begin typing.

The new service includes sending messages, photos and videos right from the camera roll or albums and works over WiFi or 3G.

Apple has really outdone themselves on this one, what do you think?

biteSMS has just been updated to version 5.2 which includes integration with TextFreek, a service that provides free SMS messaging between iOS, Android, and Blackberry users. This update to biteSMS also includes iOS 4.3 compatibility. The update also includes a few new features such as remembering contact settings for the bite network and carrier network. Jailbreakers should still keep in mind that even though iOS 4.3 compatibility has been added, there’s still no easy untethered iOS 4.3 jailbreak solution available yet. Click through for a full list of changes.

  • TextFreek integration (text for FREE!!!) – See biteSMS, Settings, TextFreek.
  • iOS 4.3 compatibility.
  • New feature for the default send method to be ‘Remember per Contact’. Especially useful when you’d like to switch to using the biteSMS network for specific friends (say international or not included in your carriers unlimited plan).
  • Added ringtone support for iOS 4.2.1 such that biteSMS now interacts correctly with the new iOS per contact ringtone feature.
  • For biteSMS Ringtones (packaged or in directory structure) the volume is now reduced by 50% if headphones are plugged-in.
  • With privacy set, the [Open] and [Call] buttons should display as active / inactive as expected.
  • Fixed up bug when composing a new scheduled message it did not always show the scheduled clock icon.

Anyone download the new version? Let us know of any bugs or issues you experience in the comments!

Apple today posted a Verizon Wireless upgrade eligibility checker on their site along with voice/data/messaging plans — only to pull them down a short time later. While up the information seemed to confirm what we have been hearing about the data plans where there will be unlimited for $29.99 a month and the option to throw the hot spot on there with 2GB extra for an additional $20 a month.

Voice

  • 450 minutes $39.99/month
  • 900 minutes with unlimited to 5 selected people (any network) $59.99/month
  • Unlimited $69.99/month

Data

  • Unlimited iPhone $29.99/month
  • Unlimited iPhone + 2GB tethering/Personal 3G Hotspot $49.99/month

Messaging

  • Pay per use $0.20 per SMS/month, $0.25 per MMS/month
  • 250 messages $5/month
  • 500 messages $10/month
  • Unlimited messaging $20/month

These seem to be pretty straight forward with the current Verizon smartphone plans with the exception of the unlimited text messaging for $20/month. Current users have been offered 5,000 messages for $20/month but it appears as if they are at least going to offer iPhone users unlimited messages for the same amount per month. It seems like it would make sense for them to switch their smartphone plan to the same but we will have to wait and see.

Why did the information disappear? Maybe someone in Cupertino jumped the gun and posted it a tad early. If they decide to put it back up we will update you so you can check your eligibility and check out the plans for yourself.
